Helping Hounds Dog Rescue | Saving Lives, One Dog at a Time

Who We Are?

Who We Are

Helping Hounds Dog Rescue (HHDR) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to rescuing homeless and at-risk dogs, providing them with a safe haven, and matching them with loving families. Since our founding in 2009, we have worked tirelessly to offer a second chance to dogs in need, primarily from overcrowded shelters. Based in North Syracuse, NY, we are a passionate team of staff and volunteers committed to making a lasting impact—one adoption at a time.

Our Mission

At HHDR, we believe every dog deserves a chance at a happy and fulfilling life. Our mission is to connect dogs in need with compassionate adopters, ensuring they find safe and loving forever homes. By working with shelters, rescues, and dog control facilities, we provide an alternative to euthanasia and help alleviate the burden of overcrowding in traditional shelters.

Our Journey

HHDR began with a single act of kindness in 2008—rescuing a beagle mother and her puppies from euthanasia. That small act grew into a movement, and by January 26, 2009, Helping Hounds Dog Rescue was officially incorporated as a non-profit. We quickly outgrew our first space and moved to a leased facility in Dewitt in 2010. By 2020, we found a permanent home on Caswell Street, transforming an old Air Force recreational center into a safe haven for dogs in need—just before the world changed with the COVID-19 pandemic.

Our very first rescue, Lola Jean, found love, safety, and happiness in her final years, reminding us of our purpose: every dog deserves a chance. Her legacy continues to inspire everything we do.

What We Do?

What We Do

Finding the perfect match between a dog and a family is at the heart of HHDR. We take great care in screening adoption applicants and ensuring every dog is placed in a home where they can thrive. Every year, we place over 1,700 dogs with loving families, changing lives—both human and canine—forever.

Volunteer Program

Our rescue wouldn’t be possible without our dedicated volunteers. With over 300 volunteers contributing more than 20,000 hours annually, our team provides care, training, transportation, and love to our rescues. From walking dogs to helping at adoption events, every role is crucial to our success.ies are the architects of their own progress.

Donations & Support

HHDR relies on the generosity of our community. Donations—whether financial, supplies from our wish list, participation in fundraisers, or purchasing HHDR merchandise—help provide medical care, training, and resources needed to save more dogs. Every contribution makes a difference in a dog’s life.
